Description Erect robust perennial, forming dense tussocks, with thick, long rhizomes. Culms not noded, slender, rigid, obtusely trigonous above, distinctly trigonous at the base, sulcate-striate when dried, smooth, 30–90(–132) cm tall, 1–3(–4) mm in diameter. Leaves all basal, with well developed blade, 35–72(–86) cm long, shorter than to as long as the culms; blade obtusely triangular to subterete in cross-section, rigid, strongly ribbed on the angles, deeply channelled towards the base because of the strongly involute margins, scaberulous on the margins, 0.8–2.6 mm wide; sheath equitant (flattened laterally), dilated at the base, pale to chocolate-brown, striate, dull, with scarious, pale margins, not tightly clasping the culm; junction of sheath and blade apparently lacking a ligule. Lowest inflorescence bract erect, similar to the leaves, shorter to slightly longer than the inflorescence, 8–15 cm long, often breaking off after anthesis, upper bracts decreasing in length and becoming glume-like; sheath usually short, 2–12 mm long, reddish brown, lamina linear. Inflorescence compound, paniculiform, erect, rather diffuse to dense, narrow to spreading, (6–)11–29 cm long, with several internodes, consisting of 4–10 distant fascicles of branches in the bract axils; branches 1–3 together, unequal, 2.5–22 cm long, exserted from the sheath, rigid, flexuous, compressed, scaberulous on the margins. Spikelets subsessile, in clusters of 2–8, 4–6 mm long, 1–l.5 mm in diameter, lanceolate, subterete to slightly compressed, 1-flowered, brown, the rachis not elongated or flexuous. Glumes 4,2–5 mm long, oblong-lanceolate, acute, obscurely distichous, membranous, yellowish-brown with reddish-brown markings on the sides, whitish on the margins, keel brown, glabrous except for sparse minute prickle hairs along midrib, sides each with 2–6 white striations or thin nerves; basal 2 glumes 2–3 mm long, sterile; next glumes 4–5 mm long, with a bisexual flower. Hypogynous bristles (3–)6, linear to linear-lanceolate or rarely lanceolate, 0.3–0.7(–1.1) mm long, shorter than nutlet, margins with dense, white, short, antrorse hairs, falling with the nutlet. Stamens 3; filaments 3.4–3.7 mm long, glabrous; anthers 2.0–2.3 mm long, ~0.2 mm wide, twisted when dry, apiculum up to 0.4 mm long, narrowly triangular. Style 3-fid, 2.2–3.9 mm long, branching for 1/4–1/3 of its length, slender, mostly of similar thickness, but swollen at the base, dark brown at maturity, deciduous. Nutlet narrow-ellipsoid to obovoid, with 3 whitish ribs, slightly reticulate-rugulose at 40? magnification, papillate or shortly hispidulous at the apex, otherwise glabrous, yellowish-brown when immature, dark brown to blackish at maturity, l.3–1.5 mm long, 0.7–0.8 mm in diameter. [details]
