Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, thick. Culms lateral, 15-60 cm tall, trigonous, covered with dark brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves longer than culms; leaf-blade brown, flat, revolute, leathery, 8-15 mm wide, acuminate at apex, scabrous on upper margins. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 1-2 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 3-5(7) spikes; terminal spike staminate, rarely androgynous, clavate-cylindrical, 2-5 cm long» 2. 5-3 mm wide, with a peduncle at base; lateral spikes androgynous» rarely pistillate, cylindrical, 2. 5-8(-11) cm long, 7-9(-11) mm wide, densely flowered, bearing a 1-2. 5 cm long staminate part at apex, pedunculate; peduncles exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales elliptic-ovate, reddish brown, ca. 4 mm long, obtuse or acute at apex, brown 1-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales ovate to broadly ovate, reddish brown, 3-3. 5 mm long, acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa on dorsal surface. Perigynia ellipsoid or ovoid (excluding beak), 5. 5-6. 5 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, papery, dark brown, distinctly veined, glabrous, gradually contracted into a 2-3 mm long beak; orifice 2-lobed with teeth. Stigmas 3; style slightly thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, 2-3 mm long (including beak), castaneous, with 3 angles constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracted into a long beak at apex, beak coiled or curved, annulate at orifice.
