Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, thick, with many brown, fibrous adventitious roots. Culms central, 15-60 cm tall, trigonous, covered with dark brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves longer than culms; leaf-blade dark brown, flat, 4. 5-13. 5 mm wide, acuminate at apex; sheaths dark brown, fibriform at apex. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 2. 5-4 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 4 or 5 spikes; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical, 2-5 cm long, ca. 2. 5 mm wide, with a 4 cm long peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 3-8 cm long, 9-10 mm wide, densely flowered, pedunculate; peduncles exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales lanceolate, yellowish brown, 10-11. 5 mm long, acuminate at apex, brown l-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales lanceolate, pale yellow, 4. 5-5. 5 mm long (including awn), acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa on dorsal surface. Perigynia ovoid or broadly ovoid (excluding beak), 6-7 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, herbaceous, brownish green, distinctly veined, sparsely pubescent on veins, abruptly contracted into a ca. 3 mm long beak; orifice 2- lobed with teeth.
