Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, thick. Culms central, 20-60 cm tall, trigonous, covered with brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves longer than culms; leaf-blade yellowish green, flat, leathery, 4. 5-10 mm wide, scabrous on margins, acuminate at apex. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 1-1. 5 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 3 spikes; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical, 2-5 cm long, ca. 2.5 mm wide, with a peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 3-6 cm long, 9-10 mm wide, densely flowered, pedunculate; peduncles exserted or slightly exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales ovate-lanceolate, yellowish brown, 3. 5-5 mm long, acute at apex, brown l-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales ovate or ovate-elliptic, pale green, 6-7 mm long (including awn), acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a ca. 3.5 mm long scabrous awn. Perigynia ellipsoid, ovoid or broadly ovoid (excluding beak), 7-8 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, subleathery, pale green or glaucous, distinctly veined, glabrous, gradually contracted into a long beak; orifice 2-lobed with short teeth, Stigmas 3; style thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, 4-6 mm long (including beak), castaneous, with 3 angles constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracted into a ca. 1 mm long beak at apex, beak erect, annulate at orifice.
