Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, thick. Culms lateral, 10–90 cm tall, trigonous. Leaves longer than culms; leaf-blade yellowish green or brownish green, flat, leathery, 10–27 mm wide, scabrous on upper margins, acuminate at apex. Involucral bracts leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 1–2 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 3 or 4 spikes; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical, 3.5–8 cm long, 2.2–5 mm wide, with a peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 2.5–9 cm long, 8–13 mm wide, densely flowered, pedunculate; peduncles slightly exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales elliptic-lanceolate, yellowish green, 5–5.5 mm long, obtuse at apex, green 3-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales narrowly ovate to ovate, pale green, ca. 5 mm long (including awn), acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a scabrous awn.Perigynia ovoid (excluding beak), 7–10 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, papery, yellowish green or green, distinctly veined, glabrous or sparsely pubescent on veins, gradually contracted into a long beak; orifice 2-lobed with short teeth.
