Basal sheaths reddish purple or dark purple. Involucral bracts spathelike, involucral bract sheaths green and slightly reddish purple or dark purple, lower involucral bracts with short blade, upper blades setaceous. Inflorescences terminal spike staminate, cylindrical, 0.7–1 cm long; lateral spikes pistillate, oblong, shortly pedunculate, 2–3 cm long, loosely 10 or more flowered. Staminate scales reddish purple, apex shortly awned. Pistillate scales pale brown laterally, green at middle, 2.5–3 mm, 3-veined, membranous, apex rounded or truncate, with awn 0.8–1 mm. Perigynia slightly longer than pistillate scales, ovoid, ca. 4 mm long, loosely pubescent, 2-veined laterally, base attenuate into a long stipe, apex contracted into a short beak, orifice emarginate.
