Description Herbs perennnial. Rhizome short, ligneous thick, with many brown fibrous adventitious roots. Culm very short, central, 10-15 cm tall, trigonous, covered in dark brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves longer than culms, 25-70 cm long: leaf-blade dark green, flat, 6.5-15 mm wide, slightly scabrous on upper margins, acute or acuminate at apex; sheaths dark brwon, filiform at apex. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, shortly sheathed: sheaths 0.3-1.2 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 4-7 spikes; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical or clavate, 2-5 cm long, ca. 2.5 mm wide, with 2-5 cm long peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 3-7 cm long, 6-8 mm wide, densely flowered, pedunculate; peduncles slightly exserted from sheaths. Perigynia ovoid to bradly ovoid (excluding beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, herbaceous, brownish green, distinctly veined, sparsely pubescent on veins, abruptly contracted into a ca. 2 mm long beak; orifice 2-lobed with short teeth. Stigmas 3; style thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, ca. 4 m m long (including beak), castaneous, with 3 angles constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracted into a beak at apex, beak slughtly curved, annulate at orifice.
