Description Rhizomes creeping, stems densely tufted. Bases of lower sheaths pale brown, strongly ribbed; dark brown, dull, fibrous, bladeless sheaths present at base. Leaves inserted on lower 1/3 of culm, blades shorter than to slightly exceeding culm, 1.5-2.4mm wide. Culm 14-33(-42)cm. Infl. linear. spike-like, 3.5-7.5cm; lowest lateral spike 8-14.5 x 2-3mm. Spikes (4-)7-10, sessile, erect, closely appressed to axis, usually overlapping, lower sometimes more distant, lowest internode under 1cm (occasionally to 2.5cm); topmost 1-3 spikes entirely male (in which case very small) or gynaecandrous, other spikes entirely female or with a few basal male flowers, utricles erect; lowest bract leaf-like, greatly exceeding infl., not sheathing. Utricles lanceolate, plano- convex, (2.9-) 3.5-4.5 x 0.9- 1.3mm, flattened margins widened upwards into short (1.4-1.7mm), bidentate beak, strongly veined on curved face, obscurely veined on flat face, greenish-straw-coloured, margins of beak minutely serrate; stigmas 2. Female glumes narrowly lanceolate to ovate, subacute to very acute, 2.7-3.3 x 1-1.8mm, hyaline with green midrib. [details]

Description Rhizome short, stout, indurate. Culms tufted, 25–50 cm tall, slender, trigonous, smooth, clothed at base with brown or pale brown bladeless sheaths disintegrating into fibers. Leaves shorter or longer than culm, blades linear, 2–3 mm wide, flat, soft; membranous side of leaf sheaths at mouth projected forming a tonguelike appendage or not. Lower involucral bracts leaflike, surpassing inflorescence. Spikes 5–10, gynaecandrous, oblong, 5–15 × 3–4 mm, upper spikes approximate, lower ones remote. Female glumes pale, oblong, 2.5–3 mm, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a scabrous short awn, apex acute. Utricles green or green-yellow, longer than glume, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 3–4 mm, conspicuously veined on both faces, many veined abaxially and hardly veined adaxially, or nerveless, base cuneate, shortly stipitate, upper half of margins narrowly scabrous winged, apex gradually attenuate into a long beak, orifice 2-toothed. Nutlets tightly enveloped, plano-convex, 1.5–2 mm, base contracted and shortly stipitate, apex subrounded; style base thickened; stigmas 2. Fl. and fr. May–Aug.  [details]
