Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous. Culms very short, lateral, 3–8 cm tall, trigonous. Leaves 25–70 cm long, far longer than culms; leaf-blade 1.4–2 cm wide, flat, upper margins slightly scabrous, apex acuminate; sheaths dark brown, fibriform at apex. Involucral bracts sheathlike. Inflorescence paniculate, with 3–6 approximate spikes; terminal spike staminate, cylindrical, 1.8–3 cm long, 4.4–5 mm wide, with a 1–5 cm long peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 1.8–3.5 cm long, 7–9 mm wide, densely flowered, shortly pedunculate. Staminate scales yellowish brown, obovate-lanceolate, 5–5.5 mm long, obtuse at apex, brown 1-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales ovate or elliptic-ovate, yellowish-brown, 3.5–4 mm long, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a short mucro at apex.
Perigynia broadly ovoid (excluding beak), oliver-brown, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, 6–8 mm long, leathery, sparsely pubescent, distinctly veined, gradually contracted into a ca. 2 mm long beak; orifice 2-lobed with short teeth.
Stigmas 3; style thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, ca. 4.5 mm long (including beak), castaneous, with 3 angles constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracted into a short beak at apex, beak erect, annulate at orifice. [details]
