Description Perennial herb. Rhizome thick, woody, obliquely ascending. Culms 2540 cm tall, obtusely trigonous, slender, smooth, with grayish brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves shorter than culms or equal in length, 12 mm broad, reflexed at margin, scabrous on the upper surface. Lower bracts shortly foliaceous, upper setaceous, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 0.51.5 cm long. Spikes 2 or 3, unisexual; terminal one staminate, linear or clavate, 1.02.5 cm long, 12 mm broad, with a 1.52.0 cm long peduncle; lateral 1 or 2 spikes pistillate, cylindric, 0.81.3 cm long, ca 3 mm broad, rather densely flowered, with peduncles enclosed in bract sheaths. Staminate scales elliptic-lanceolate, 4.55.0 mm long, obtuse at apex, white on dorsal costa, brown at margin; pistillate scales ovate or narrowly ovate, 2.02.5 mm long (awn excluded), cuminate and shortly awned at apex, green on dorsal costa, 3-nerved, brown at margin. Perigynia nearly equaling pistillate scales, ellipsoid-obovoid, membranous, glabrous, ca 2.5 mm long, green, tenuously veined, attenuately contracted into a short beak at apex, orifice minutely 2-toothed.
