Description
Rhizome stoloniferous. Culms 49--83 cm tall, 1.2--1.5(--1.8) mm thick, trigonous, slender, stiff,
multinoded, clothed with dark purplish brown and bladeless sheaths at lower part; sheaths 1.5--9.4 cm
long. Upper leaves as long as or longer than culm; blades 2--3 mm wide, flat, with transverse septate nodes
between longitudinal veins, rather long sheathed; sheaths often overlapping, dark purplish brown; upmost
leaf bract-like, much smaller. Involucral bract sheath-like, included in to totally exerted from upmost leaf
sheath, up to 7 cm long, usually with a bristle at top, bristle 1--9.2 mm long, upper bracts sheath-like with
shorter bristle or without bristle. Spikes 3 or 4, remote; terminal spike male, linear, 4--7.5 cm long, 1.2--2
mm wide; lateral spikes female, narrowly cylindrical, 2.3--5.2 cm long, 2.1--3.6 mm wide, with 14--32
laxly arranged spikelets; peduncles of lateral spikes filiform. Male scales yellowish brown, oblanceolate,
7.1--8.6 mm long, 1.5--1.9 mm wide, membranous, apex blunt or bluntly acute. Female scales brown,
obovate-oblong or oblong, 2.5--2.6 mm long, 1.2--1.4 mm wide, membranous, midrib green, 1-veined,
apex acute. Perigynia green, sometimes reddish brown at lower part, easily deciduous in maturity, longer
than scale, obovoid-ellipsoid or ellipsoid, obtusely trigonous, 3--3.6 mm long, 1.1--1.5 mm wide,
herbaceous, glabrous except ciliate beak, distinctly 2-veined laterally with several thinner veins between,
base cuneate, apex abruptly contracted into a beak; beak 0.7--1 mm long, orifice shortly 2-toothed.
Achene tightly enveloped in perigynium, obovoid or ellipsoid, trigonous, 2--2.5 mm long, 1.2--1.5 mm
wide. Stigmas 3. [details]
