Description Rhizomes elongate or short, woody, stiff. Culms 45‒60 cm tall, acutely trigonous, smooth or upper part scabrous, base with grayish brown sheaths. Leaves cauline and basal, longer than culms; blades linear, 4‒6 mm wide, flat, margin and abaxial surfaces scabrous. Bracts sheathless, lower ones leaf-like, much longer than inflorescence, upper ones setaceous or scale-like. Spikes 4‒6; terminal spike staminate, clavate, 3.5‒7 cm long, 2.5‒3 mm wide, densely flowered, base shortly pedunculate or subsessile; lateral spikes androgynous, apex with 6‒28 staminate flowers, cylindrical or long-cylindrical, 4‒7 cm long, 3.8‒4.2 mm wide, densely flowered, lowermost ones pedunculate, upper ones shortly pedunculate to sessile. Staminate scales elliptic-lanceolate, pale yellowish brown, 3.2‒3.5 mm long, apex acuminate, with green-brown 3-veined costa. Pistillate scales ovate or narrowly ovate, pale green, 2‒2.5 mm long, apex acuminate, with green 3-veined costa extending to a mucro. Perigynia obliquely patent, broadly obovoid, inflated, obtusely trigonous, pale brown-green, longer than pistillate scales, 3‒3.5 mm long, membranous, distinctly thinly 4- or 5- veined, purplish to red-punctate, base attenuate and shortly stipitate, apex gradually contracted into a 0.5‒0.7 mm long straight beak, orifice truncate. Achenes loosely enveloped in perigynia, obovoid, trigonous, brown, 1.2‒1.5 mm long, base with a short curved stalk, apex emarginate; style not thickened at base; stigmas 3. [details]
