Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, thick. Culms lateral, 20-65 cm tall, trigonous, covered with brown sheaths at base. Leaves longer than culms; leaf-blade brownish green, flat, leathery, 4-10(-17) mm wide, acuminate at apex, scabrous on margins. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 1. 5-4 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 4-6 spikes; terminal spike staminate, linear-cylindrical, 2. 5-7 cm long, ca. 2.5 mm wide, with a long peduncle at base; lateral spikes androgynous, cylindrical, 2. 5-8 cm long, ca. 8 mm wide, densely flowered, rarely with 6-7 pistillate flowers, bearing a 1-3 cm long staminate part at apex» pedunculate; peduncles exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales oblanceolate, pale brown, 7-8 mm long, acuminate or acute at apex, brown 1-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales ovate, pale yellow, 4-5 mm long, acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa on dorsal surface. Perigynia broadly ovoid or ovoid (excluding beak), 5. 5-6. 5 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, papery, yellowish brown, distinctly veined, sparsely pubescent on upper veins, or subglabrous, gradually contracted into a ca. 2 mm long beak; orifice 2-lobed with teeth. Stigmas 3; style thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, 2-2, 5 mm long (including beak) , castaneous, with 3 angles constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracted into a short beak at apex, beak coiled.
