Description Rhizomes short, woody. Culms caespitose, 50‒75 cm tall, acutely trigonous, lower part smooth, upper part slightly scabrous, base with yellowish brown fibrous sheaths. Basal leaves shorter than or as long as culms; blades 3‒5 mm wide, stiff, flat, apex acuminate. Bracts sheathless, lower ones leaf-like, longer than inflorescence, upper ones shortly leaf-like or setaceous, shorter than inflorescence. Spikes 4‒6, aggregate; terminal spike staminate, long-cylindrical, 5.5‒12.5 cm long, 2‒3 mm wide, densely flowered, base with 5‒20 mm long peduncles; lateral spikes pistillate, apex sometimes with a few staminate flowers, long-cylindrical, 7‒13 cm long, 5‒6 mm wide, densely flowered, with 8‒20 mm peduncles or subsessile. Staminate scales lanceolate, pale yellow, 3‒4 mm long, apex acuminate or mucronate, with green 1-veined costa. Pistillate ovate, pale yellow, 2.5‒3 mm long, apex acuminate, with green or yellowish brown 3-veined costa extending to a ca. 1 mm long scabrous awn. Perigynia obliquely patent, ovoid or obovoid, obtusely trigonous, yellowish brown, slightly shorter than pistillate scales, or nearly equal in length, 2.5‒3 mm long, distinctly 9‒12-veined, base cuneate, apex abruptly contracted into a ca. 1 mm long, slightly curved beak, margin sparsely hispidulous, orifice emarginate or 2-lobed with minute teeth. Achenes tightly enveloped in perigynia, ovoid or obovoid, trigonous, pale yellowish brown, 1.4‒1.6 mm long, apex mucronate; style slightly thickened at base; stigmas 3. [details]
