Simple stems with a rounded section, although sometimes triangular towards the apex. Basal, flat, ligulate leaves. Terminal inflorescence, in a compressed spike, formed by sessile, distich spikelets; bract of the single, foliaceous inflorescence, those of the glumiform spikelets; spikelets up to 25, moreless circular cross-section. Glumes in helical arrangement, glabrous. Hermaphrodite flowers; perianth formed by (3)4–5(6) scabrid bristles. Stamens 3. Style imperceptibly widened towards the base, with 2 stigmas. Achenes plano-convex or biconvex, smooth, with the base of the style persistent in the form of a short column. [details]
