Description Herbs, perennial, evergreen. Rhizomes short, cespitose, sometimes with short stolons. Culms central on leafy shoots, several to many, 20–50 cm tall, trigonous, upwardly scabrous, 0.5–1 mm thick. Leaves radical; foliage leaves green, linear, 20–60 cm long, flat, 2–5 mm wide, stiff, margins scabrous to serrulate, basal sheath part shortly developed; basal sheath leaves reddish or dark brown, shining, slightly fibrillose. Flowers April to May. Inflorescences racemose, with 3–6 spikes on upper 1/2 to 2/3 of culm, solitary at each node; terminal spike staminate, pedunculate, linear, 2–4 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, reddish or dark brown; lateral spikes androgynous with short staminate portion or pistillate, pedunculate, erect to ascending, cylindrical, 1.5–3.5 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, many flowered. Bracts setaceous, with long sheath, rather loose. Staminate scales narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, 4–5 mm long, apex awned, awn ca. 3 mm long. Pistillate scales lanceolate to ovate, 2–3 mm long, apex awned, awn 1–3 mm long, midrib green or whitish, margins widely pale to reddish brown. Perigynia ovoid to fusiform, trigonous, 3–3.5 mm long, ca. 1 mm wide, membranaceous, several veined, slightly pubescent, yellowish green, base cuneate, beak 1.5 mm long, apex bidentate.
