Description Herbs, perennial, evergreen. Rhizomes short, cespitose. Culms central on and lateral to leafy shoots, several to many, 20–40 cm tall, acutely trigonous, smooth, 0.3–0.8 mm thick. Leaves radical; foliage leaves green, linear, arching, 20–60 cm long, flat, 5–12 mm wide, both surfaces smooth, margins basally rather smooth and apically scabrous, basal sheath part shortly developed; basal sheaths leaves pale brown, fibrillose. Flowers April to May. Inflorescences racemose, with 3–6 spikes on upper 2/3 to 3/4 of culm, solitary at each node; terminal spike staminate, pedunculate, linear, 1–2 cm long, ca. 2 mm wide, yellowish green or pale brown; lateral spikes pistillate, pedunculate, erect, narrowly cylindrical, 1–3 cm long, 2–3 mm wide, subdensely many- flowered. Bracts setaceous, with sheath. Staminate scales lanceolate, 4–6 mm long, acute. Pistillate scales elliptic to ovate, slightly shorter than perigynia, 2–2.5 mm long, apex acute or short awned, midrib green, margins widely whitish. Perigynia erect to ascending, ellipsoid or ovoid, obtusely trigonous, 2.5–3 mm long, ca. 1 mm wide, membranaceous, finely several veined, veins conspicuous after drying, pubescent, base cuneate, apex suddenly narrowed to beak, beak to 1 mm long, apex bidentate. Achenes tightly enveloped by perigynia, roundish-rhombic, 1.2–1.5 mm long, ca. 1 mm wide, faces distinctly concave, style base thickened, conical. Stigmas 3. [details]
