Lowest bract (8)11-30(44) cm × 2-4.5(6) mm; sheath 2-5.5(6.5) cm long. Lateral spikes (1)2-6(8.9) cm × 5-8(10) mm, ± terete. Male glumes 4-7 × 1-1.6(1.8) mm, dark reddish-brown to purplish-red. Female glumes, (3)3.5-5.5(6) × (0.8)1.1-1.7(2) mm, pale to medium purplish-red to purplish. Utricles (3.5)4-5(5.5) mm long; beak 1.2-2.1 mm, smooth or sometime with short, scattered, minute prickles. 2n = 70. [details]
