Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, stoloniferous. Culms central, 20-45 cm tall, trigonous, pubescent, covered with brown fibrous sheaths at base. Leaves shorter than culms; leaf-blade green, flat, revolute, leathery, pubescent on both surfaces, 3-5 (13) mm wide, acuminate at apex, scabrous on upper margins. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, pubescent, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 1. 5-2. 5 cm long, pubescent, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 2 or 3 spikes; terminal spike staminate» clavate, 1. 5-4 cm long, ca. 5 mm wide, with a long peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical, 1. 5-3. 5 cm long, 8-10 mm wide, densely flowered, pedunculate; peduncles exserted from sheaths. Staminate scales narrowly ovate, yellowish green, pubescent, ca. 7 mm long, acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales ovate, pale green or yellowish green, pubescent, 5-6 mm long, acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a short scabrous awn.
