Description Perennials. densely caespitose. Stems 20-40 cm tall. Leaves nearly equaling or shorter than stem, 1.5-3 mm wide, soft. Basal sheaths brown, shiny, split into fibers. Involucral bracts leaf-like, with sheaths. Inflorescences terminal spike male, linear cylindric to clavate, 1-3 cm long; lateral spikes female, narrowly cylindric, 1-2.5 cm long; lowest spike slightly distant from upper spike, subsessile or shortly pedunculate. Staminate scales light brown, apex serrate, rounded, 3-4 mm long. Pistillate scales midrib green, margin membranous, 1.5-2 mm long, apex acute, with long awn; awn 0.5-1.5 mm long. Perigynia obovate, longer than pistillate scale, ca. 3 mm long, pubescent, with short beak, mouth notched. Achenes tightly enveloped by perigynium, obovate trigonous, 1.5-2 mm long, brown, with concave surface, apex discoid-annulate. Pistil style base conically thickened; stigmas 3. [details]
