Description Perennials. densely caespitose. Stems 20–50 cm tall. Leaves equaling or shorter than stem, elongating after flowering, 2–6 mm wide. Basal sheaths dark brown, shiny, narrowly split. Involucral bracts setaceous, with short sheaths. Inflorescences terminal spike male, clavate, 1–3 cm long, lateral spikes female, cylindrical, 1–3 cm long, lowest spikes sometimes long pedunculated, rachis 0.5–4 cm long. Staminate scale midrib dark brown to brown, apex with short awn. Pistillate scale midrib dark brown to purple brown, apex emarginated with short awn. Perigynia elliptical, longer than pistillate scale, 4–6 mm long, 1.3–1.8 mm wide, densely pubescent, with elongated beak, mouth notched. Achenes tightly enveloped by perigynium, elliptical, 3–4 mm long. Stigmas 3. [details]
