Description Caespitose rhizome, with short, robust internodes. Basal sheaths flesh-colored, slightly orange, when dry entire or very slightly fibrous. Fertile stems (20)30–70(75) cm, smooth, obtusely trigonous. Leaves (1)1.5–3.5(5.5) mm wide, shorter than the stems, smooth except in the apical area where they are scabrous on the margins and on the midrib on the underside, flesh-colored when dry. Ligule 0.5–3.5(8) mm long, not wider than the blade, with apex subacute to rounded, margins entire or somewhat torn. Lower bract leaflike, shorter than the inflorescence, with a sheath (7)19–52(82) mm. Male spike (11)17–32(46) × (1)2–3.5(5) mm, solitary, rarely 2, narrowly oblanceolate. Male glumes oblong, with obtuse, acute or shortly mucronate apex, dark purplish brown. 2–4 female spikes (9)13–25(40) × (2.5)3.5–5(7) mm, cylindrical, oblong, distant, the lowest often near the base of the plant, with peduncles rarely exceeding the sheath, never pendulous. Female glumes ± oval, muticous to shortly mucronate, usually not reaching the base of the utricle beak, dark brown except in the midrib area, which is green. Utricles (2.2)2.7–3.8(4.5) × (0.7)1.1–1.5(1.9) mm, suberect, trigonous, broadly elliptical in outline, variably tinged red, with all nerves prominent, more frequently the two lateral ones, usually contracted into a beak (0.5)0.6–1(1.5) mm, bifid, usually smooth though occasionally with scattered prickles. Achenes (1.4)1.6–2.3(3.2) × (0.6)0.8–1.2(1.8) mm, trigonous, elliptical in outline. [details]
