Description Caespitose, with a somewhat robust rhizome. Fertile stems 20–80 cm, obtusely trigonous, slightly scabrous in the upper part. Leaves (2)3–8 mm wide, although exceptionally some leaves of sterile shoots may reach 14 mm in width, shorter than the stems, flat or folded, not very rigid, somewhat scabrous in the apical area, light green in color; ligule 2–7(10) mm, with irregular apex and width equal to or less than the blade; anteligule 3–4 mm, obtuse; basal sheaths ± entire, light brown in color. Lower bract leaflike, generally as long as or longer than the inflorescence. Male spike solitary, (10)20–40 × 2–3(4) mm, ± cylindrical; female spikes (2)3–4, (3)6–17 × (3)6–8 mm, ovoid, the upper ones grouped below the male, the lower one erect but with a peduncle that may reach 7 cm. Male glumes oblong or obovate, mucronate, light brown in color; female glumes ± oval, mucronate or acuminate, with the mucro or awn densely covered with long prickles, light brown in color. Utricles (2.8)3–3.8(4.2) × 1.1–1.5(2) mm, oval in outline, trigonous, spreading or erect-spreading, with all nerves visible, although the 2 lateral ones are much more prominent, dull, tapering into a beak 1–1.2 mm, generally straight, though sometimes curved backward, bifid, bearing numerous prickles larger than 0.1 mm extending along the margins, sometimes up to the middle of the utricle body. Achenes 2–2.1 × 1–1.2 mm, elliptical in outline, trigonous. 2n = 68, 69, 70. [details]
