Description Densely tufted, with a not very thick rhizome. Fertile stems 3–20(30) cm, thick, obtusely trigonous, smooth. Leaves up to 3.5(4) mm wide, shorter than the stems, rather rigid, almost flat or with a V-shaped cross section, scabrous on the margins along most of their length, light green in color; ligule up to 2 mm, with a variable apex, narrower than the blade; antiligule 0.5–3 mm, with a ± obtuse apex; basal sheaths entire or somewhat torn, but never fibrous, usually dark brown. Lower bract leaf-like, often as long as or longer than the inflorescence. Male spike solitary, 6–12(17) × 1.8–2.5(3) mm, shortly cylindrical or fusiform; female spikes 2–4, 6–13(15) × 2.3–5 mm, ± oval or shortly cylindrical, the upper ones generally close together, the lower one often arising from the basal part of the stem, almost sessile or with peduncles exceeding the sheath by up to 4.5 mm, erect. Male glumes obovate, apex usually rounded, dark reddish-purple when young, becoming paler as the plant matures; female glumes oval, emarginate or more often with a mucro barely exceeding the notch, reddish-brown to dark purple-brown, with a green midrib. Utricles (2)2.2–2.3(3.2) × 1–1.4(1.8) mm, suberect, oval in outline, obtusely trigonous, often tinged red, with only 2 marginal nerves, abruptly narrowed into a beak 0.4–0.6(0.9) mm, bidentate, densely aculeolate. Achenes 1.5–2.1 × 0.9–1.3 mm, elliptical in outline, trigonous. 2n = 68. [details]
