Description Perennial tufted rhizome with smooth internodes except at the apical margins, not very robust; basal sheaths usually rigid, light green to brown, generally light, entire or slightly glaucous, flat or folded, not very fibrous; fertile stems smooth, obtusely trigonous, 5–40(–50) cm long; leaves narrower than the blade; ligules up to 2 mm with obtuse apex; anteligules up to 2.5 mm; lower bract foliaceous, rarely setaceous, shorter than the inflorescence; male spike solitary, rarely 2, more or less cylindrical, 8–22 × 2–4.5 mm; male glumes narrowly ovate to oblong, apex variable, reddish-brown to dark purplish-brown; 1–4 female spikes, distant, lower usually basal or nearly so, short cylindrical, 6.5–19 × 2.5–6 mm; female glumes more or less ovate, apex variable, dark reddish-purple; utricles suberect, oval, all nerves prominent, 3–4 × 1.1–1.8 mm, gradually attenuated—rarely abruptly narrowed—into a smooth or sparsely spinulose beak, bidentate to bifid, 0.5–1.8 mm; achenes trigonous, oval in outline, 2–2.7 × 0.9–1.3 mm; 3 stigmas. [details]
