Description Loosely tufted. Rhizome very short. Stems erect, trigonous, 20-34 cm tall, 1-1.75 mm thick below, smooth. Leaves mostly basal but some subbasal, slightly to much shorter than the stems, 2-5 mm wide, flat or flattish. Spikes 4-5, usually all but one somewhat crowded or contiguous at the apex of the stem, the lowest usually at a node 4-11 cm distant down the stem, terminal usually male but sometimes androgynous, gynandrous, or nearly wholly female; when male, cylindric, 1.5-2.5 cm long and 1.75-2.25 mm thick, lateral spikes suberect to obliquely spreading, female, or rarely a few male flowers at the apex, shortly cylindric to cylindric-ovoid, 7-18 mm long, 6-8 mm thick, dense-flowered, upper spikes sessile or subsessile, lower scarcely or shortly exserted-peduncled. Bracts of the lower 1-2 (3) spikes foliaceous to subfoliaceous and, excluding the distant one, two much exceeding the inflorescence, uppermost female spike shortly or scarcely bracteate, lowest scarcely or shortly, others not sheathing. Female glumes more or less oblong or gradually narrowing upwards, with a very obtuse to rounded or truncate-rounded or slightly bilobed-emarginate apex, 2.2-2.5 mm long, 0.9-1.1 mm wide, whitish below, upper third especially towards the margins, or usually less, castaneous with sometimes a narrow and irregular whitish edge, midrib usually not but sometimes very shortly excurrent. Utricles narrowly ellipsoid but tapering at each end, especially above, subinflated and obscurely trigonous, 3.5-4.25 mm long, 1-1.5 mm broad, membranaceous, rather strongly several-nerved dorsally and ventrally, extremely narrowly marginate, glabrous, straight or sometimes very slightly curved, subpatently to patently spreading at maturity, becoming bright yellowish or yellowish-green below, not or scarcely stipitate; beak tapering, subgradually from the utricle proper, then gradually to the apex, terete or compressed-terete, 1.1-1.5 mm long, very narrowly to scarcely marginate, glabrous or sometimes very sparsely hispidulous on the margins, especially above, bidentulate; teeth straight or straightish. Achene subpyriform or obovoid but tapering below, distinctly trigonous, angles slender, 1.3-1.5 mm long (excluding beak), about 1 mm broad, nut-brown including angles, very shortly and stoutly pale-stipitate, abruptly beaked at the rounded apex; beak slender, pale, about 0.2 mm long. Style long and slender. Stigmas 3. [details]
