Description Herbs perennial. Rhizome short, ligneous, Culms central, 10-40 cm tall, trigonous. Leaves longer or equal to culms; leaf-blade green or dark green, flat, leathery, 2-15 mm wide, scrabrous on margins, acuminate apex. Involucral bracts shortly leaf-like, uppers setaceous, shorter than inflorescence, sheathed; sheaths 0.5-1.2 cm long, obliquely truncate at orifice. Inflorescence paniculate, with 2-4 spikes; terminal spike staminate, clavate, 1-3 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, with a peduncle at base; lateral spikes pistillate, cylindrical or shortly cylindrical, 0.5-2 cm long, 5-7 mm wide, pedunculate; peduncles slightly exserted from sheaths, or enclosed. Staminate scales ovobate-oblong, yellowish brown or pale green, 6-7 mm long, acute or obtuse at apex, green 1-veined costa on dorsal surface. Pistillate scales broadly ovate or ovate, pale brown or pale green, 3-4 mm long (including awn), acuminate at apex, green 3-veined costa excurrent into a short scabrous awn. Perigynia ovoid, rarely obovoid (excluding beak), 5.5-6.5 mm long, longer than pistillate scales (including beak), obliquely patent, obtusely trigonous, papery, pale green or yellowish green, distinctly veined, spersely pubescent to pubescent, gradually contracted into a beak: orifice 2-lobed with short teeth or conspicuous teeth. Stigmas 3: style thicken at base. Achenes tightly enveloped, rhombic-ovoid, trigonous, 3-4 mm long (including beak), yellowish brown or castaneous, with 3 angles constricted or shallowly constricted at middle, sides concave above and below, shortly curved, stipitate at base, abruptly contracte into a short beak at apex, beak erect, annulate at orifice. [details]
