Biology Tall perennial with a horizontal rhizome often producing stems at up to 1 cm intervals; stems (10–)40–90 cm long and 1–2 mm thick, triangular, scabrid on angles, the larger part covered by leaf-sheaths. Leaves numerous, high up the stem; lower sheaths brownish, the upper green, mostly glabrous; blades usually 10–30 cm long and 2–3 mm wide, flat or inrolled, prominently scabrid at least near the apex. Inflorescence of 1–2 stalked or subsessile spikes from each of the uppermost sheaths; subtending bracts leafy and mostly longer than the spikes. Spikes 1–2.5 cm long and 3–4 mm wide, consisting of 2–10 female flowers at the base and 10–25 male flowers at the tip; male part of the spike longer than the female. Glumes c. 4 mm long, ovate, glabrous, yellowish brown or light reddish brown with a prominent pale marginal border and a green 1–3-nerved midrib ending in the acute apex; male glumes similar to the female. Style with 3 long stigmas. Utricle narrowly lanceolate, 3.5–4 x c. 1.5 mm including a 1–1.5 mm long distinct beak, green to light reddish brown with fairly prominent nerves on all sides, usually densely short-hairy at least in its upper half. Nutlet c. 2.5 x 1 mm, narrowly elliptic-triangular, almost smooth, dark reddish brown but with a pale base. [details]
