Description Perennials. loosely caespitose, rhizome long, creeping. Stems 30-100 cm tall, trigonous, scabrous on upper part. Leaves longer than stem, blades 3-5 mm wide, flat, scabrous. Basal sheaths reddish purple, later usually splitting into reticulate fibers. Involucral bracts leaflike, longer than inflorescence, upper bracts sheathless, lower bracts short sheaths. Inflorescences spikes 5-6; terminal 2-4 spikes male, linear, 1.5-3 cm long, ca. 2 mm wide; remaining spikes female, cylindric, 2-6 cm long, 4-5 mm wide, distance 4-6 cm between 2 spikes. Staminate scales reddish brown, apex acute or obtuse. Pistillate scales reddish brown, oblong-ovate, 2-3 mm long, membranous, 3-veined, margins white hyaline, apex aristate and 1.2-2.2 mm long. Perigynia ovate, 3-4 mm long, trigonous, membranous, short and white pubescent, faintly veined, base cuneate, apex contracted into long beak, mouth 2-toothed.
