Folia late linearia (3,5–6 mm.), dilute viridia, marginibus nervoque dorsali scabris, ima parte excepta, paniculae inferiora; ligulae parte laminae adnata variabili, folii superioris ovato-obtusa, inferiorum triangulo-acutiuscula, margine anteriore vix arcuato, basim laminae superante. Panicula anguste oblonga (5–7,5 cm. longa), magis et magis ex apice ad basim interrupta, spiculis brevibus, ovatis, superioribus 5–8 contiguis vel subcontiguis, inferioribus 2–3 subcompositis, longe distantibus, intervallis spicularum longitudine duplo majoribus. Bractea inferior albido-subviridis, vel dilute subrufa, basi dilatata semi-amplexicaule, in carina scabra, cuspide setiformi marginibus scabris, spiculum inferiorem aequante vel vix superante, producta. Squamae femineae pleraeque utriculos aequantes vel paulo breviores (nonnullis paulo longioribus), ovatae, apiculatae, albae vel ± rufulae, scariosae, nervo plerumque viridi. Utriculi luteo-subvirides, erecti vel vix subpatentes, ovati (4,5–5 × 2 mm.), manifeste dorso nervati, ventre obscure vel vix ima parte paucinervati, basi incrassata, subero-spongiosa, apice scabri, sensim in rostro bifido, cuspibus erectis, attenuato. Translation Stems 70–100(–120) cm tall, erect, rigid, triquetrous, with two faces nearly flat and the third concave; angles acute, two of them winged, scabrous toward the apex. Leaves broadly linear (3.5–6 mm), light green, margins and dorsal nerve scabrous except basally, not reaching the panicle; the portion of the ligule adherent to the blade variable, ovate-obtuse in the upper leaf and triangular-somewhat acute in the lower leaves, the anterior margin scarcely arched, exceeding the base of the blade. Panicle narrowly oblong (5–7.5 cm long), increasingly interrupted from apex toward base; spikes short, ovate; the upper 5–8 contiguous or subcontiguous; the lower 2–3 somewhat compound, far apart, the intervals about twice the spike length. Lowermost bract whitish-greenish or faintly somewhat reddish, base dilated and half-amplexicaul, keel scabrous, tip setiform, margins scabrous, produced, equalling or scarcely exceeding the lowest spike. Female scales mostly equalling the utricles or slightly shorter (some a little longer), ovate, apiculate, white or somewhat reddish, scarious, with the nerve usually green. Utricles yellowish-green, erect or scarcely spreading, ovate (4.5–5 × 2 mm), clearly nerved on the back, on the ventral side obscure and scarcely few-nerved only at the very base; base thickened, suberose-spongy; apex scabrid, produced into a bifid beak with erect teeth, attenuate. Achene ovate, plano-convex (2 × 2.75–3 mm). [details]
