Translation Cespitose herbaceous plant. Creeping roots. Stems flaccid, about 1½ feet long, leafy, scaly at the base, acutely triangular, ridged, with scabrous angles. Leaves very long, shorter or about the same length as the longest stems, narrowly linear, 1½ lines wide, flat, glabrous on both surfaces, rough above and on the margins, smooth beneath. All sheaths smooth, glabrous, lacking an opposite ligule; the lower leaves are bladeless, purple, and with margins disintegrating into fibers forming networks, like a ladder. Staminate spikes 1-2, terminal, linear; Scales scarious, oblong, the upper ones acuminate, submucronate, midrib excurrent. Pistillate spikes 2-3, lateral, distant, linear, loose-flowered, erect, the upper one subsessile, the lower 2 shortly pedunculated; foliose bracts very long, narrowly linear, subequal to the stem, lacking a sheath; scales ovate-lanceolate, leaf-green on the back, scarious on the margin, gradually narrowing upwards, acuminate, awned-mucronate with an excurrent midrib, mucro with scabrous margins. Sometimes, in addition, there is sometimes a fourth female spike, adventitious, with a very long peduncle, emerging from the sheath of the distal leaf of the stem, which is then very long. Immature perigynia equal to or exceeding the scales, ovate-conical, swollen, long-beaked, glabrous, smooth, erectopatent, ribbed; The beak is elongated, long, with two teeth, convex at the back, flat at the front. Stigmata 3. [details]
