Description Moderately robust to very robust, stoloniferous herbs; rhizome 6-7 mm diameter, still roots present. New plants may grow vegetatively from the stem. Cataphylls ovate to lanceolate, 1-2 × 0.3–0.5 cm, acute. Culms several, erect or drooping in some matured inflorescence, lateral, 0.7–7.2 × 0.1 cm, tercle, glabrous, green. Leaves from basal and from stem; leaf-blade narrowly oblong or linear-oblong, 13-26 cm × 1.5–2.6 cm, apex abruptly narrowed, acute, cuspidate, base gradually to abruptly narrowed into pseudopetiole, coriaceous, medium to dark green, young emerging leaves salmon pink on underside, 3-nerved, the secondary nerve distinct, septate-nodulose when dry, margins entire to seabrid near apex; pseudopetiole 1-30 × 0.3–0.4 cm; sheath ovate, 3.0–5.0 × 1.0–2.0 cm, apex narrowed or abruptly narrowed, green, may be reddish on the margin. Involucral bracts several, glumaceous, ovate, 0.4–2 × 0.2–0.3 cm, acute, membranous, green to brown, glabrous, nerves indistinct. Inflorescence terminal, from leaf axil and stolon, composed of 1 spike; spike lanceolate to elliptic when mature, 1.0–2.5 × 0.4–0.7 cm, yellowish green to green, when matured light brown, spicoid bracts ovate to lanceolate-ovate, 0.5–0.8 × 0.3–0.4 cm, obtuse, coriaceous, glabrous, mid-brown, nerves indistinct; floral bracts 6, free, lowest 2 bracts linear, 0.7–1.5 × 0.1 cm, acute, mid-brown, flat to slightly keeled, keel wingless, moderately hispid, upper bracts linear, 6–7 × 0.5–1 mm, acute, glabrous; staminate flowers 3 per spicoid, anthers linear, 3 mm long, cream, filaments up to 0.5 mm long; stigma branches 3; white, style 3 mm long, dark reddish brown. Fruit ellipsoid, 0.5–0.6 × 0.2 cm, apex apiculate, base stipitate; exocarp succulent, thin, without sculpturing, mid-brown to dark brown, costac absent. [details]

Diagnosis The new variety is closely similar to M. cuspidata var. angustifolia by having narrowly leaf blades but can be differentiated by their vegetative habits. The var. merayap is always with stoloniferous habit whilst var. angustifolia is rhizomatous. [details]
