Diagnosis C[arex sect.] Legitimæ radice repente culmis trigonis tenuibus lævibus superne scabriusculis, vaginis puberulis reticulato-laceris, foliis linearibus angustis apice attenuato-acuminatis superne scaberrimis culmo brevioribus, bracteis foliaceis linearibus inferioribus spicas axillares superantibus infra basi subvaginanti spicam supremam æquanti vel superanti, spicis remotiusculis breviter pedunculatis erectis, masculis sub-binis terminalibus cylindrico-clavatis, femineis 2-3 laxe cylindricis, squamis nigro-fuscis lanceolato-oblongis longe acuminatis spicarum mascularum latioribus, stigmatibus tribus, utriculis (junioribus) lanceolatis subtrigonis in rostrum scabrum longe bidentatum attenuatis.Planta pedalis vel paullo longior. Folia inferne lineam lata. Spicae femineæ 7-9 lineas longe. Affinis C. sempervirenti et præsertim C. frigida, a quibus differt spicis erecti laxioribus, squamis longe acuminatis. [details]
Lectotype "Lectotype" written on a label by Vitali Iwanowicz Kreczetowicz on specimen LE01181931, but I (Étienne Lacroix-Carignan, 2025) could not locate the original document where the species was lectotypified. This may not be a validly published lectotypification. [details]
Translation Long-rhizomatous. Culms thin, triangular, smooth below, scabrous in the upper portion. Leaf sheaths pubescent, ladder-fibrillose, leaf blades linear, narrow, with an attenuate-acuminate apex, scabrous in the distal part, shorter than the culms; pistillate bracts foliaceous, linear, longer than the lateral spikes they support, with a short sheath, proximal pistillate bract equaling or exceeding the terminal spike.
Spikes distant, erect, atop a short peduncle; terminal 1-2 spikes staminate, cylindrical-clavate, pistillate spikes 2-3, loosely cylindrical; pistillate scales black-brown, lanceolate-oblong, long acuminate, wider than the staminate scales, stigmas 3, (immature) perigynia lanceolate, subtriangular in cross-section, gradually tapered into a long scabrous beak, with 2 distinct apical teeth.
Plant a foot high or slightly longer. Lower leaves one line wide. Female spikes 7-9 lines long. It is related to C. sempervirens and especially to C. frigida, from which it differs in its erect, loose spikes, with long-acuminate scales. [details]
