Description Plants rhizomatous, glabrous, the rhizomes 2–4 mm in diameter, probably congested. Culms erect to arching, triangular, 43–70 cm long, 3 mm wide below first cauline leaf. Leaves basal and 0–1 cauline (not subtending a synflorescence); basal leaves on each shoot ranging from bladeless sheathes to leaves with
blades, the sheaths indistinct, usually opened; largest basal leaf with sheaths 7–10 cm long (measuring the hyaline remnant), the blades linear, 60–80 × 1.7–3 cm; leaves on fertile culms linear; basal cauline leaf (or basal bract subtending a synflorescence if no cauline leaf is present) with sheath 4–6 cm long, the summit of the sheath singly to doubly arched, the arches convex and rounded to pointed, with a projecting, arching chartaceous contraligule 35 mm long and as wide as hemouthof the sheath, the blades 52–76 × 2.1–2.9 cm. Inflorescence a seriesof (2–) 5–9 paniculate synflorescences of approximately the same size, each subtended by a leaf-like bract, the bracts at each more distal node diminishing in size; synflorescences with two orders of branching, with 5–9 very slender secondary branches and comprising 10–40 spikelets, the central axis about half the length of the basal lateral branch; lowest lateral synflorescence with peduncle 3–6 cm long, the central axis 1.4–1.5 cm long, the lowest (longest) lateral axis 2.3–3 cm long, the spikelet pedicles 3–15 mm long, very slender, the spikelets never clustered. Mature spikelets in flower ellipsoid to broadly so, slightly compressed laterally, 2.9–3.8 × 1.7–2.4 mm, ferrugineous, the glumes distichous, the glumes gradually increasing in size distally; largest glumes broadly ovate, 2.1–2.2 × 1.8–2 mm, carinate, cucullate, mucronate, the mucro black. Achene broadly elliptic to broadly obovate in outline, deeply ellipsoid to nearly globose, 1.8–2.1 × 1.6–2 mm, the summit slightly arched, the surface shiny, reddish brown to brown, lightly granular; style base persistent, triangular, 0.60.8 × 0.5–0-.8 mm. Hypogynous bristles 2–4, 0.5–1.8 mm long, flattened, densely papillose ciliolate, especially along the margins. [details]
