Description Robust, tussocky, rhizomatous, dioecious perennial, with fibrous remains of leaf sheaths at base of plant. Culms up to 60 cm × 1.1–1.4 mm, two-sided, erect to pendant, greenish-brown, margins scabrid. Leaves many, crowded, pendant, basal, up to 60 cm long; blade narrowly linear, up to 51 cm × 2.5–3 mm, apex very gradually narrowed, long-acuminate, v-shaped in cross-section, coriaceous, mid-green but drying in situ to pale brown towards apex, margins scabrid; sheath 8–9 cm long, open, ligulate; ligule membraneous, triangular, pale brown, the fibrous remains of the sheaths dark brown. Inflorescence wholly male or female, narrowly paniculate, 3.5–7 × 1.9–4 cm, with 2–4 nodes, each node with a leaf-like inflorescence bract exceeding the inflorescence, up to 37 cm long, and subtending a 2–7 cm long axis supporting 3–11 spikelets. Spikelets similar in male and female inflorescences, narrowly cylindric, 2.1–2.7 cm × 1.2–1.3 mm acute, pale brown maturing dark brown, the prophyll and lowest 7–9 glumes sterile, other glumes fertile; glumes ovate, 3.5–4 × 1.3–1.4 mm, obtuse, sides pale brown to dark rusty brown, nerves 0, margins pale, entire, membraneous; perianth bristles 7, unequal, shorter in the female flowers, antrorsely hairy; stamens 3, anthers 1.1 mm long, yellowish-white; stigmas 3, mid- to dark reddish-brown.
