Description Moderately robust, shortly stoloniferous perennial herbs; rhizome 2–4 cm long, 8–15 mm diameter. Cataphylls 6–10, elliptic to lanceolate, 7.5–12 x 1.6–2.1 cm, maroon or brownish maroon. Culm 1- to several, erect, lateral, 5–20 cm x 2–4 mm, glabrous, brownish or maroon red. Leaves basal, up to 47.5 cm long; leaf blade oblong or linear oblong, 11–32.5 x 3–7.6 cm, apex abruptly narrowed or cuspidate with cauda c. 3–4 cm long, base gradually narrowed into a short pseudopetiole which widens into the sheath, coriaceous to subcoriaceous, papey when dried, upper surface greenish, dull, lower surface reddish purple with maroon nerves (in living material), 3-nerved, secondary nerves distinct, flat in cross-section, margins entire to serrulate or more or less scabrid near apex; pseudopetiole 10–20 x 1.5–2.5 cm, sheath lanceolate, 4–6.5 cm x 4–15 mm, apex very gradually narrowed, coriaceous, reddish green to maroon. Innovlucral bract 3–5, glumaceous, ovate to lanceolate, 2.5–4.5 x 0.6–0.8 cm, basal bract shorter, coriaceous; peduncle slender, 8–14 cm long. Inflorescence terminal, ovoid to lanceolate, composed 1–4 spikes; spikes remaining ± obscured b floral bracts even at maturity, ovoid-lanceolate, 1.4–2.5 x 1–1.4 cm; spicoid bracts lanceolate, 1–1.2 x 0.6–1 cm, coriaceous, nerves indistinct; floral bracts, free, lowest 2 bracts linear to linear lanceolate, 5–8 mm long, keeled, wingless, hispid, upper bracts linear, flat to ± keeled, glabrous; staminate flowers 3 per spicoid, anther linear, 2–2.6 mm long, stigma branches 3, style 5 mm long. M. zinnirahae has single spike (up to 2.) smaller spicoid bracts and ovoid spikes, whereas M. sapuaniana occasionally has 3 spikes with sessile terminal capitulum, larger spicoid bracts and angular spikes.
