Description Moderately robust, rhizomatous herbs; rhizomes 2-5 mm diameter. Culms solitary or in clump, erect, central, triquetrous, glabrous, light green. Leaves basal, up to 185 cm long; leaf blade linear, 145-170 x 4.5-5 cm, apex abruptly narrowed, cuspidate, broadly obtuse to rounded, base gradually narrowed into pseudopetiole, coriaceous, light to medium green or yellowish green, 3-nerved, secondary nerves distinct, flat in cross-section, margin entire to seabrid near apex; pseudopetiole 30-38 x 2-2.3 cm. Inflorescence sessile, composed of 3-7 spikes, the spikes often remaining obscured by involucral bracts at maturity, spikes 4-4.2 x 2-2.5 cm, greenish yellow, pistillate flowers numerous per spike (20-30) enclosing staminate flowers located in the centre in separate spicoids. Involucral bracts 7-9 or more, ovate to lanceolate, 2.7-3 x 1.3-2.2 cm, coriaceous, margin wrinkled with thin light brown layer, light to medium green or yellowish green. *Spicoid 7-9 per spike, 6-8 consist of pistillate flowers, only 1 with staminate flowers*. Spicoid bracts lanceolate, 3-3.2 x 1.2-2 cm, coriaceous, greenish yellow, apex acute, light brown green, glabrous; floral bracts linear, 3.5-3.7 cm long, membranous, transparent whitish with light brown at apex, inner floral bract 4, free, 6-6.2 x 3-3.2 mm, membranous, whitish with light brown at apex. Each spicoid consists of 4-6 anthers, anther linear, 3.5-3.6 mm long, whitish, filament up to 2 mm long. Each spicoid consists of 3-4 stigmas, stigma branches 2 or 3 (rarely 4), 5-6.5 mm long, whitish. Fruit ellipsoid, 8-8.5 mm long, 3-3.3 mm wide, surface with tubercles, apex acute, black. [details]
