Description Robust, rhizomatous herbs; rhizome 2-2.5 cm diameter. Cataphylls absent. Culms several, erect, lateral, 1-11 cm x 0.3-0.5 cm, terete to subtrigonous, glabrous, greenish. Leaves basal, crowded and strongly 3-ranked, up to 186cm long, leaf-blade linear, 170-186 cm x 1.7-2.2 cm, apex very gradually narrowed, base gradually narrowed into sheath, thickly coriaceous, mid to dark green, 3-nerved, secondary nerve indistinct, inverse-w in cross-section, indistinctly septate-nodulose when dry, margins coarsely serrulate, pseudopetiole absent, sheath lanceolate, 9-14.5 x 2.0-2.4 cm, apex very gradually narrowed, coriaceous to thickly coriaceous, greenish to mid brown; leaf under surface glaucous. Involucral bract several, glumaceous, ovate to lanceolate, 2-4 x 1-2 cm, basal bract longest, obtuse, coriaceous, greenish, glabrous, nerves indistinct. Inflorescence terminal, elliptic to lanceolate, composed 1-3 spikes, spikes remaining ± obscured by involucral bracts even at maturity, linear, 1.3-2.0 x 1.5-2.4 cm, greenish brown, distinct when involucral bracts removed, spicoid bracts lanceolate, 1.5-3 x 1-1.5 cm, subcoriaceous, greenish or brown, nerves indistinct; floral bract 6, free, lowest 2 bracts linear to linear lanceolate, 2.0-2.5 cm, flat, glabrous, staminate flowers not seen, stigma branches 3, style up to 2 cm long. Diagnosis The species is similar to M. longiflora, but has a distinct longer and narrower, leaf apex which is very gradually narrowed, leaf base strongly 3-ranked, fruit dark brown or black, ellipsoid, apex elongated.
