Description Robust, rhizomatous herb; rhizome 1.8-2 cm in diameter. Cataphylls absent. Culms several, erect, lateral, 10-35 cm long and 0.2-0.3 cm wide, cylindrical, glabrous, greenish yellow or pale green. Leaves basal, crowded and strongly 3-ranked, up to 175 cm long; leaf-blade linear, 135-170 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, apex very gradually narrowed, base gradually narrowed into sheath, thickly coriaceous, green to mid-green, 3-nerved, secondary nerve indistinct, inverse-w in cross-section, indistinctly septate-nodulose when dry, margins coarsely serrulate, pseudopetiole absent; sheath lanceolate, 7-12.5 cm long and 1.8-2.2 cm wide, apex very gradually narrowed, coriaceous to thickly coriaceous, light green to mid brown. Involucral bract several, glumaceous, ovate to lanceolate, 1.5-5 cm long and 1-2.2 cm wide, basal bract shorter, obtuse, coriaceous, greenish, glabrous, nerves indistinct. Inflorescence terminal, composed of 1 spike; spikes lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 2-4 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide, dark brown to light brown, the colour lighter toward the apex; spicoid bracts ovate-lanceolate, 1-2.2 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, subcoriaceous, greenish brown or chocolate brown at the bottom, and light brown at the upper part, margins finely serrulate, light brown colour along, nerves indistinct; floral bract 6, free, lowest 2 bracts linear to linear lanceolate, 1.5-2.2 cm long, flat, glabrous; staminate flowers 3 per spicoid, anthers 8-10 mm long, whitish; stigma branches 3, style up to 2 cm long. [details]Diagnosis This species is similar to M. enodis but with a distinct longer and narrower leaf apex which is very gradually narrowed, leaf base strongly 3-ranked and dark brown, fruit ellipsoid with elongated apex.
