Description Slightly robust, stoloniferous herbs; rhizome about 10 mm in diameter. Culm arising from leaf axil, short, 5–20 mm long, 3–4 mm in diameter, greenish yellow. Leaves basal, slightly 3-ranked, up to 35 cm long; leaf-blade oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 10–24 cm long and 2.8–4.5 cm wide, apex abruptly narrowed, obtuse to rounded, cuspidate to long cuspidate (3–5 cm), base abruptly narrowed into pseudopetiole, subcoriaceous, 3-nerved, secondary nerves distinct, septate-nodulose when dry, margins slightly serrulate toward the apex; pseudopetiole present, shorter than leaves, 3–7 cm, channelled along the lower third, gradually developing into sheath. Inflorescence terminal, 2–3 or more per plant; spike slightly globose or broadly ovoid, 10–20 mm long, 13–15 mm in diameter, greenish yellow to dark green; lower bract shorter, slightly oval, 6–7 mm long and 5–6 mm wide; spicoid bracts 8–9 mm long and 7–8 mm wide; floral bracts 6, free, lowest 2 bracts oblong, 9–10 mm long and 2 mm wide, obtuse, light to mid-brown, striate with brownish keel, narrowly winged; upper bracts linear, 9–10 mm long and 1 mm wide, acute, glabrous. Staminate flowers 1–2 per spicoid; anthers linear-oblong, up to 6 mm or more; filament 11–12 mm long; stigma branches 3; style 3 mm long. Fruit ovoid with acute apex, black. [details]

Diagnosis Closely similar to M. richardsii in general appearance but easily distinguished by its stoloniferous growth habit (vs. rhizomatous in M. richardsii). The spike is globose or broadly elliptic, measuring 10–20 mm in length and 13–15 mm in width, with spicoids dark green to greenish brown. [details]
