Description Perennial, 30– 40 cm tall, caespitose, the base slender, not bulbous. Culms 0.6 mm wide, cylindrical or subcylindrical, glabrous. Leaves usually 5; sheaths 23 cm long, not becoming fibrous when old, glabrous; blades 14– 15 cm × 0.3– 0.6 mm, ½ or ¾ the height of the culms, linear, flat, the margins scabrous. Inflorescences capitate, subtended by 4 involucral bracts; involucral bracts similar to the spikelet glumes, ovate, flat, dark brown, membranous, the margins ciliate; basal bract 13– 15 mm long, the expanded basal portion 6– 7 × 5– 6 mm, obovate to pyriform, the contracted distal portion 7– 8 × 0.3– 0.4 mm, stramineous; second bract 6– 7cm× 0.2– 0.3 mm. Capitulum 7– 10 × 9– 10 mm, turbinate. Spikelets 510, 6– 7 × 1.2– 1.7 mm, linear or linear-lanceolate, comprising 8– 10 glumes, basal 3 glumes empty, followed by a single perfect flower and 4– 6 distal staminate flowers; third basal scale 3– 3.6 × 1.52 mm, ovate-lanceolate, brown, coriaceous, glabrous, the apex acute; scale subtending the perfect flower 44.5 × 2– 2.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, involute, brown, coriaceous, glabrous; glumes subtending the staminate flowers stramineous or brown, the basal one coriaceous, the others membranous, all glabrous.
