Description Habit densely cespitose in small clumps from short, stout, fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 30–63 cm tall, apparently erect, exceeding the leaves, trigonous, antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths light to dark brown and fibrillose and with persistent leaf remnants of previous years. Leaves 4–7, on the proximal 1/4 of the culms; blades 7–40 cm long, (0.7–)1.2–3.1 mm wide, flat to folded, attenuate, becoming channeled and finally triangular at the apex, densely papillose adaxially, glabrous or occasionally finely papillose abaxially, the margins and midrib scabridulous distally, light-green-colored; leaf sheaths tight, glabrous, pale green to brownish abaxially, whitish to brown stained and somewhat hyaline adaxially, sometimes sparingly red-dotted, concave to truncate and ±thickened at the apex, older sheath fronts beoming pale brown; ligules 0.2–2.3 mm long, truncate to rounded, the free portion entire, whitish to yellowish, 0.1–0.2 mm wide. Vegetative shoots unknown. Inflorescences 2.6–4.4 cm long, 0.8–1 cm wide, linear-oblong, with 5–6 spikes, the distal 2–3 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 6–13 mm distant, subsessile; proximalmost bracts foliaceous, 8–13.5 cm long, ±antrorsely scabrous margined and lacking expanded, hyaline margins at the base, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 10–14 mm long, the pistillate portion 5.5–9 mm long, 6–8 mm wide, 15–24-flowered, the staminate portion 3–5.5 mm long, (1.2–) 24.2 mm wide, 8–25-flowered, rotruding ca. 0–4 mm beyond perigynia; lateral spikes smaller or the proximalmost ±equaling the size of the terminal; cladoprophylls ±distended and asymmetrical, but ±similar in color, venation, and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.7–4.7 mm long, 1.3–1.8 mm wide, all but the distalmost exceeding the perigynia, oblong-lanceolate, glabrous or scabridulous only along the midvein, with a 3-nerved green to brown center, yellowish to reddish-brown-streaked sides and hyaline margins, long acuminate or with an awn up to 0.2 mm long. Staminate scales 3–4.1 mm long, 1–1.2 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, reddish-brown with hyaline margins and a 3-nerved green center. Perigynia (3.2–) 3.4–3.9 mm long, 1.5–1.8 mm wide, spreading-ascending, trigonous with broadly ovate to elliptic sides, adaxial side ±concave, finely 9–11-nerved, abaxial sides flat, 5–7-nerved with two of the nerves stronger and prolonged into the beak, contracted into a short stipe 0.3–0.4 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, green or brown-tinged, coriaceous, papillose, tuberculate, hairs spreading-ascending, 0.05 0.15 mm long, distributed over the entire surface, terete, linear-conical, whitish; tapered or contracted into a beak; beaks 0.9–1.4 mm long, ca. 0.3 mm wide, often hirsute on the margins, deeply bidentate at the apex with teeth 0.5–0.7 mm long. Achenes 2.1–2.4 mm long, 1.3–1.5 mm wide, trigonous with concave, broadly ellipsoid sides, yellowish to pale brown, subsessile, apiculus essentially lacking; style straight, the base finely papillose, stigmas ca. 2–3 mm long, flexuous, feathery, the papillae longer than the stigma width. Anthers (1.6–) 2.2–3.4 mm long, filaments exserted >1 mm, ca. 0.05 mm wide, filiform and much narrower than the anthers, flexuous, whitish.  [details]
