Description Habit cespitose in small clumps from fibrillose rhizomes. Culms (12–) 20–45 (76) cm tall, spreading, shorter to usually longer than the leaves, sharply trigonous, antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths light-brown, slightly fibrillose, darkening with age (as also the leaves of previous years). Leaves (3–) 4–8, mostly clustered on the proximal 1/4–1/8 of the culms; blades herbaceous, 10–36 cm long, 0.5–4 mm wide, flat or sometimes folded, becoming triangular at the apex, glabrous or minutely papillose adaxially and abaxially, the margins and midrib scabrous, light-green-colored; leaf sheaths pale green, yellowish or tramineous dorsally, whitish to stramineous and somewhat hyaline ventrally, sometimes sparingly orange-dotted, truncate to concave at the apex; ligules truncate to acute, 0.2–3.6 mm long, sometimes split at the apex, the free portion whitish to brown, ca. 0.2–0.3 (–0.4) mm wide. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, 4–6.5 cm tall, with 57 leaves. Inflorescences 1.9–7.1 cm long, 0.5–0.8 cm wide, oblong to linear, with 36 spikes, the distal 2 or 3 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 7–30 mm distant, subsessile to short (up to 14 mm) peduncled; proximalmost bracts 4.5–21 cm long, foliaceous, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 7.5–11 mm long, the pistillate portion 5.2–7.5 mm long, (4–) 4.4–6.5 mm wide, 13–27-flowered, the staminate portion 2.1–4.9 mm long, 0.7–1.2 (–1.5) mm wide, 7–14-flowered, usually inconspicuous, protruding 0–4.1 mm beyond perigynia; the lateral much smaller, except the proximalmost more or less similar to the terminal; cladoprophylls ±tubular or slightly distended, ±similar in color and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2–4.5 mm long, 1–1.8 mm wide, somewhat shorter than to much exceeding the perigynia, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to long-acuminate, glabrous, white to very slightly ochraceous with a 3-nerved green center and hyaline margins. Staminate scales 1.2–2.1 mm long, 0.7–1.6 mm wide, ovate to elliptic, obtuse to acute, ±cucullate, whitish-hyaline to pale brown with a 3-nerved green center. Perigynia 23.2 mm long, 0.8–1.3 mm wide, ascending, trigonous, with elliptic to obovate sides, adaxial side flat or slightly concave, ±nerveless or finely and inconspicuously 12–16 nerved, abaxial sides flat, 4–8-nerved, tapering ±cuneately to the base, green, herbaceous, papillose, not or inconspicuously tuberculate, hairs ascending to ±spreading, 0.03–0.08 mm long, distributed over the entire surface though concentrated on the nerves, strongly flattened, narrowly deltate to deltate, whitish; contracted into a beak; beaks 0.2–0.5 mm long, obliquely cut or shortly bidentate with teeth 0.1–0.3 mm long. Achenes (1.5–) 1.7–1.8 mm long, 0.8–0.9 mm wide, trigonous with flat or concave, finely "pebbled", elliptic to obovate sides, pale-green to pale brown, sessile, apiculus essentially absent; style straight, glabrous, stigmas ca. 1–2.2 mm long, coiled to somewhat flexuous, finely papillose to ±smooth (papillae shorter than the width of the stigmas). Anthers 0.5–1.1 mm long, filaments short exserted to 0.1–0.6 mm, flattened, ca. 0.1–0.2 mm wide, about ½ as wide as the anther, stiffly curved yellowish-white, darkening apically after the anthers are shed.  [details]
