Description Habit densely cespitose in small clumps from short, stout, fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 30–92 cm tall, spreading, shorter or longer than the leaves, acutely trigonous, sometimes winged on the angles, easily flattened, vesicular papillose, antrorsely scabrous-angled and sometimes scabridulous along the veins distally; bladeless basal sheaths stramineous to brown, easily ruptured, fibrillose, darkening with age. Leaves 3–8, clustered on the proximal 1/5–1/8 of the culms; blades herbaceous, (7.5–) 17–56 cm long, 1.1–2.9 mm wide, flat or somewhat revolute, attenuate, becoming ±channeled and finally triangular at the apex, conspicuously vesicular-papillose adaxially and abaxially, the midrib sometimes prominent on the abaxial side and channeled on the adaxial side, the margins and midrib smooth to antrorsely scabrous, green and more or less iridescent-reflective above when living; leaf sheaths tight, pale green to stramineous or pale brown abaxially, whitish to stramineous, opaque or somewhat hyaline adaxially, convex or truncate at apex; ligules truncate, retuse, or up to 2 mm long, sometimes oblique, the free portion 0.1–0.2 mm wide, white to light brown. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, 3.5–5 cm tall, with 5–8 leaves. Inflorescences 2.8–7.5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, oblong to linear, with 2–3 (–4) spikes, the distalmost two approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 8–33 mm distant, sessile to short (to 2 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts 2.5–13.5 (–27) cm long, foliaceous, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 17–27 mm long, the pistillate portion 3.6–12 mm long, 4.8–7 mm wide, 5–12-flowered, the staminate portion 7.5–18 mm long, 1.4–1.7 (–2) mm wide, 21–40-flowered, very conspicuous, protruding 5–15 mm beyond the perigynia; middle spikes slightly smaller; proximalmost spike more or less similar to the terminal one, cladoprophylls ±inflated, ±similar in color and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.9–4.5 mm long, 1.7–2.2 mm wide, shorter than the perigynia or the proximalmost slightly exceeding them, ovate, glabrous or scabrous along the midvein, whitish to light brown with hyaline margins and a 1–3-nerved green to brown center, obtuse to acuminate, rarely prolonged into a short stout awn. Staminate scales 3.2–3.8 mm long, 1.3–2.2 mm wide, elliptic to oblong, obtuse to ±acute, ±cucullate, yellowish with hyaline margins and a 1-nerved green center. Perigynia 3.6–4.8 mm long, 1.5–1.9 mm wide, ascending to spreading-ascending, trigonous with elliptic to obovate sides, adaxial side slightly concave, faintly 11–13-nerved; abaxial sides ±flat, finely 9–11-nerved, two of the nerves barely prolonged into the beak, tapering to the base, green, herbaceous, papillose, not tuberculate, hairs spreading-ascending to strongly ascending, 0.03–0.1 mm long, mostly distributed along the nerves, flattened, narrowly deltate, whitish; tapered or contracted into a beak; beaks (0.6–) 0.8–1 mm long, ca. 0.25–0.4 mm wide, bidentate, teeth 0.5–0.9 mm long, hyaline at the apex. Achenes 2.5–2.9 mm long, 1.6–1.8 mm wide, trigonous with flat to concave, broadly elliptic sides and prominent angles, yellowish, ±sessile, apiculus up to 0.2 mm long; style straight, glabrous, stigmas ca. 1–2.1 mm long, flexuous to ±coiled, papillose. Anthers ca. 1.3–1.6 mm long, the filaments short-exserted to 0.2–1.1 mm, flattened, ca. 0.2 mm wide, about ½ as wide as the anther, stiffly curved, pale to dark brown, darkening apically after the anthers are shed.
