Description Habit densely to loosely cespitose in small to large, loose clumps from stout, short to somewhat elongated rhizomes, rhizome internodes to 1.5 cm long. Culms (8–) 10 40 (–62) cm tall, erect, straight to curved, exceeding the leaves, ±terete, becoming obtusely trigonous distally, ridged, occasionally sparsely antrorsely scabrous on the ridges distally; bladeless basal sheaths stramineous to dark brown, becoming fibrillose. Leaves 4–8, on the proximal 1/6 of the culms; blades 4–26 cm long, 0.6 -2.1 mm wide, coriaceous and ±wiry, attenuate, filiform-revolute, but ±flat proximally and becoming strongly channeled and fnally triangular and coiled distally, glabrous to finely papillose adaxially, glabrous abaxially, entire to ±papillose or scabrous on the margins and midrib, light-green becoming brownish green, the midrib keeled abaxially and channeled adaxially; leaf sheaths glabrous, pale green to brown dorsally, yellow to reddish brown and slightly hyaline ventrally, sometimes sparingly red-dotted at the mouth, concave to truncate at the apex; ligules 0.5–2.8 mm long, rounded to rounded-acute, the free portion entire, dark brown, 0.1–0.2 mm wide. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, ca. 1.5–5.5 cm tall, with ca. 4–7 leaves. Inflorescences (0.6–) 1.3–4.5 cm long, 0.4–0.8 cm wide, oblong to linear-oblong, with (1–) 3–6 spikes, the distal 2–3 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 4–15 mm distant, sessile or short (up to 5 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts setaceous, 1–8 (–10.5) cm long, with expanded, hyaline, reddish-brown entire margins 2–6(–8) mm long at the base, often keeled, the distal bracts abruptly reduced; spikes androgynous; terminal spike (6–) 8–19 mm long, the pistillate portion 2–13 mm long, 4–6 mm wide, 1–11-flowered, the staminate portion 4–8 mm long, 1.6–2.1 mm wide, 6–14 flowered, often conspicuous, protruding up to 6.2 mm beyond perigynia; lateral spikes smaller or the proximalmost equaling the size of the terminal; cladoprophylls elongate-tubular, green to yellowish-brown and with a conspicuous hyaline apex, ±similar in pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.4–5.2 mm long, 1.1–2.6 mm wide, equaling or slightly shorter than the perigynia, partially concealing them, oblong, glabrous, translucent reddish-brown with a strongly 3-nerved green to stramineous center and whitish-hyaline margins, acute to acuminate. Staminate scales 2.9–4 mm long, 0.8–1.6 (–2) mm wide, oblong-lanceolate, with reddish brown-tinged sides, a 1–3-nerved green to stramineous center and hyaline margins, acute to short acuminate. Perigynia (2.8–) 3.3–4 mm long, 1.1–1.5 mm wide, ascending to spreading-ascending, trigonous with elliptic to ±obovate sides, adaxial side ±concave, finely 5–9-nerved or nerves conconspicuous, abaxial sides ±convex, strongly 3–4-nerved, the nerves very thick, but with the zone near the abaxial angle ±nerveless, abruptly contracted into a thick, corky, stipe 0.7–0.9 mm long and 0.7–0.8 mm wide, with often even a constriction between the perigynium body and the stipe, green when immature, later dark brown to black, thick-coriaceous, strongly papillose, tuberculate, hairs ascending, 0.04–0.1 mm long, distributed over the entire surface, flattened, narrowly deltate to deltate, whitish to reddish-brown; tapered or contracted into a beak; beaks 0.9–1.2 mm long, 0.27–0.35 mm wide, often hirsute on the margins, deeply bidentate at the apex with teeth 0.6–1 mm long. Achenes 1.6–2 mm long, 1.2–1.3 mm wide, trigonous with ovoid to broadly ellipsoid sides, minutely pitted, pale yellowish to stramineous or light brown, ±sessile, apiculus conspicuous, cylindrical or even somewhat expanded apically, 0.2–0.5 mm long; style straight, papillose at base, stigmas ca. 4–6.5 mm long, flexuous, feathery, the papillae longer than the stigma width. Anthers 2.4–3.1 mm long; filaments exserted ca. 2.5–4.5 mm, ±0.04–0.07 mm wide, filiform and much narrower than the anthers, flexuous, pale brown. [details]
