Description Habit cespitose in small clumps from short, stout, fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 25-85 cm tall, spreading, longer than the leaves, trigonous, sometimes narrowly winged on the angles, easily flattened, slightly bulbous-thickened at the very base, antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths brown to reddish-brown, easily ruptured, becoming slightly fibrillose and darker with age. Leaves 5–12, clustered on the proximal 1/5–1/10 of the culms; blades herbaceous, 4–40 cm long, 1.7–3.4 (–4) mm wide, flat, becoming triangular at the apex, glabrous or minutely papillose adaxially, glabrous abaxially, the midrib prominent on the abaxial side, the margins and midrib introrsely scabrous distally, sometimes papillose proximally, often deepgreen-colored and more or less iridescent-reflective adaxially when living; leaf sheaths tight, pale green to reddish-brown or the proximalmost even purple-tinged abaxially, whitish to pale brown-colored, opaque or somewhat hyaline adaxially, slightly concave to truncate and sometimes dark-margined at the apex; ligules ±truncate to rounded or somewhat retuse, to up to 6.4 mm long, sometimes split at the apex, the free portion 0.2–0.3 mm wide, white to brown. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, 2–4.5 cm tall, with 4–10 leaves. Inflorescences 1.6–5.8 cm long, 0.7–1.2 cm wide, oblong to linear, with (3–) 4–5 (–6) spikes, the distal 2 or 3 approximate, sessile or subsessile, the proximalmost 7–22 mm distant, subsessile to short (up to 8.7 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts 3.5–19 cm long, foliaceous, green-margined to the base, the distal bracts gradually reduced; spikes androgynous; terminal spike 7-14 mm long, pistillate portion 4–8.5 mm long, 4.7–7 mm wide, 9–16–flowered, staminate portion 2.4–6.5 mm long, 0.9–1.4 mm wide, 8–19-flowered, inconspicuous, protruding (0–) 0.6–4 mm beyond the perigynia; lateral spikes much smaller except the proximalmost spike more or less similar to the terminal; cladoprophylls tubular or slightly inflated, ±similar in color and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.1–4.2 (–4.6) mm long, (1.1–) 1.6–2.2 mm wide, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, shorter than the perigynia or the proximalmost exceeding them, glabrous or scabrous along the midvein, with 1–3-nerved green to brown center, white to brown-tinged sides and hyaline margins, obtuse to acuminate, rarely the proximalmost prolonged into a short stout awn, Staminate scales 1.8–2.8 mm long, 0.8–2 mm wide, ovate to oblong, obtuse, ±cucullate, yellowish brown with hyaline margins and a 1–nerved green center. Perigynia (3.3–) 3.4–4.6 mm long, (1.2–) 1.3–1.7 mm wide, ascending, trigonous with elliptic to obovate sides, adaxial side slightly concave, nerveless or very inconspicuously 5–9-nerved; abaxial sides ±flat, finely (3–) 6–8-nerved, with two lateral nerves prolonged into the beak, ±cuneately tapering to the base, green to dark-brown at maturity, herbaceous, papillose, not tuberculate, hairs spreading ascending to ±ascending, 0.05–0.09 mm long, mostly distributed along the nerves, strongly flattened, deltate, whitish to reddish-brown; tapered into a beak; beaks 1–1.6 mm long, relatively narrow (ca. 0.2–0.3 mm wide), oblique or bidentulate, hyaline at the apex, teeth, if present, hyaline, soft, 0.1–0.2 (–0.5) mm long. Achenes 1.9–2.6 (2.8) mm long, 1.2–1.6 mm wide, trigonous with concave, obovoid sides, yellowish to pale-brown-colored, ±sessile, apiculus essentially lacking; style straight, glabrous at base, stigmas ca. 0.4–1 mm long, coiled, finely papillose. Anthers 0.6–1.1 mm long, filaments short-exserted to 0.2–0.9 mm, flattened, ca. 0.1–0.2 mm wide, about ½ as wide as the anthers, stiffly curved, whitish to pale brown, darkening apically after the anthers are shed.  [details]
