Description Habit densely cespitose in small clumps from short, stout rhizomes. Culms (18–) 30–91 cm tall, erect, exceeding the leaves, trigonous, antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths dark brown and strongly fibrillose and with persistent leaf bases of previous years. Leaves 6–16, on the proximal 1/3 of the culms; blades coriaceous, 8–36 cm long, 2–4.8 mm wide, strongly revolute on the margins, attenuate, becoming channeled and finally triangular at the apex, minutely papillose adaxially, glabrous abaxially, the margins and midrib scabrous distally, light-green colored; leaf sheaths tight, glabrous, greenish, yellow to brown dorsally, yellowish to dark brown ventrally (older sheath fronts strongly coppery-brown tinged), slightly concave to truncate at the apex; ligules 0.6–5.8 mm long, truncate, rounded or subacute, the free portion entire, dark brown, 0.1–0.3 mm wide. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, ca. 4–6 cm tall with 6–14 leaves. Inflorescences 3.2–9.3 cm long, 0.7–1.1 (–1.4) cm wide, linear-oblong to linear, with 3–10 spikes, the distal 2–3 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 8–33 mm distant, subsessile or short (to 10 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts foliaceous, 5.5–19.5 cm long, without expanded hyaline margins at the base, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 9–20 mm long, the pistillate portion 4–15 mm long, (5.5–) 6–9 mm wide, (5–) 19–29-flowered, the staminate portion 5–11 mm long, (1.7–) 2.1–3.2 mm wide, ca. 15–30-flowered, conspicuous, protruding 3–8.1 mm beyond perigynia; lateral spikes smaller, except often the proximalmost; cladoprophylls elongate-tubular, greenish but with a conspicuous hyaline apex, ±similar pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 3–5.6 mm long, 1.1–2.2 mm wide, exceeding or the distal shorter than the perigynia, ovoid to oblong-lanceolate, glabrous or scabridulous only along the midvein, with reddish-brown, 1–4-nerved sides, a 3-nerved green to brown center and hyaline margins, acute to long acuminate, rarely with an awn up to 0.4 mm long. Staminate scales 3.7–5.2 mm long, 1.3–1.7 mm wide, oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate, ±acute, with reddish-brown sides, broad hyaline margns and a green 1 nerved center. Perigynia (3.6–) 3.9–4.2 mm long, (1.3–) 1.4–1.7 mm wide, ascending to spreading-ascending, trigonous with ovate sides, adaxial side ±flat, finely 7–9 nerved, the nerves sometimes inconspicuous, abaxial sides flat, 5-ribbed with two of the ribs stronger and prolonged into the beak, tapering into a stipe 0.3–0.6 mm long, 0.4–0.5 mm wide, green to brown-tinged, coriaceous, sparsely papillose, tuberculate, hairs ascending to more less spreading-ascending, 0.06–0.13 mm long, distributed over the entire surface, terete, narrowly conical, whitish to reddish-brown; tapered into a beak; beaks 1–1.2 mm long, ca. 0.3 mm wide, hirsute on the margins, deeply bidentate at the apex with teeth 0.5–1 mm long, the tips hyaline. Achenes (1.8–) 2–2.3 mm long, (1.2–) 1.4–1.6 mm wide, trigonous with concave or convex broadly-elliptic sides, yellowish to pale brown, finely papillose ±sessile, apiculus poorly defined, up to 0.2 mm long, style straight, the base with reddish-brown pubescence, stigmas ca. 3–3.5 mm long, flexuous, feathery, the papillae longer than the stigma width. Anthers 1.7-2.5 mm long; filaments exserted ca. 1.5–1.8 mm, ca. 0.04–0.05 mm wide, filiform and much narrower than the anthers, flexuous, pale brown. [details]
