Description Habit densely cespitose in small clumps from short, fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 10-60 cm tall, erect, usually much exceeding the leaves, trigonous, smooth or ±antrorsely scabrous-angled distally, slightly bulbous-thickened basally; bladeless basal sheaths brown-colored, soon fibrillose and rupturing, as well as the leaves of previous years. Leaves 4–8, mostly clustered on the proximal 1/7–1/10 of the culms; blades coriaceous, 3.5–29 cm long, 0.9–3.2 mm wide, flat or folded, attenuate, becoming channeled and finally triangular and somewhat curled at the apex, distally minutely papillose adaxially and sometimes abaxially, the margins and midrib antrorsely scabrous distally; leaf sheaths tight, glabrous, pale green to stramineous dorsally, white to pale-brown-colored and somewhat hyaline ventrally, truncate to slightly concave and white to brown at the apex; ligules up to 0.6 mm long, rounded or reduced to the free portion of ±0.2 mm wide, white to brown-tinged. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, 1.5–4.5 cm long, with 4–6 leaves. Inflorescences (1–) 25.5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, oblong to linear-oblong, with (1–) 2–6 spikes, the distal 2–4 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 4.2–24 mm distant, subsessile; proximalmost bracts 0.7–16 cm long, foliaceous, usually green and usually antrorsely scabrous-margined to the base, occasionally with hyaline margins to 2 mm long at the base, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 7–14 mm long, pistillate portion 4.5–8 mm long, 4–7.5 mm wide, 5–14 (–20)-flowered, the staminate portion, 2.8–10 mm long, 1.4–3.5 (–5.5) mm wide, ca. 9–40-flowered, usually conspicuous, protruding 0–6.5 mm beyond the perigynia; lateral spikes smaller, except sometimes the proximalmost; cladoprophylls ±distended and asymmetrical, ±similar in color, venation, and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.2–3.7 (–4.2) mm long, 1–1.6 (–1.9) mm wide, shorter or slightly longer than the perigynia, ovate to ovate lanceolate, glabrous or rarely scabrous along the midnerve, white to reddish-brown tinged and 0–3-nerved on the sides with a 1–3-nerved, green to brown-colored center, and hyaline margins, acute, acuminate or the proximal sometimes prolonged into a stout awn up to 1.1 mm long. Staminate scales 3–4.2 mm long, 0.9–1.4 mm wide, lanceolate, acute to acuminate, pale to dark reddish-brown with a 1-veined green to brown center and narrow hyaline margins. Perigynia 2.5–3.4 mm long, (1.2–) 1.4 1.6 (–1.7) mm wide, spreading-ascending, trigonous with broadly elliptic to obovate sides, adaxial side flat to slightly concave, (8–)12–14-nerved; abaxial sides flat to slightly convex, 4–10-nerved, two of the nerves stronger and prolonged into the beak, tapering into a broad, short stipe 0.2–0.5 mm long and 0.4–0.5 mm wide, green to dark-brown, coriaceous, papillose, tuberculate, hairs spreading, 0.04–0.08 mm long, distributed over the entire surface, terete, narrowly conical, whitish to reddish-brown; contracted into a beak; beaks (0.4–) 0.5–1.1 mm long, (0.3–) 0.35–0.4 mm wide, deeply bidentate at the apex with teeth (0.2–) 0.3–0.7 (–0.9) mm long. Achenes 1.9-2.3 mm long, (1.2–) 1.4–1.6 mm wide, trigonous with broadly obovate, ±flat to concave sides, finely papillose, yellowish to pale-brown, ±sessile, apiculus essentially lacking; style straight, glabrous at the base, stigmas ca. (1.5–) 2–3.2 mm long, flexuous, feathery (the papillae hair-like, longer than the width of the stigmas). Anthers 1.1–2.2 mm long; filaments exserted ca. 1–2 mm, ca. 0.05 mm wide, filiform and much narrower than the anthers, flexuous, whitish to pale brown. [details]
