Description Habit cespitose in small clumps from fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 24–85 cm tall, spreading-ascending, longer than the leaves, sharply trigonous but easily flattened, smooth to antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths light-brown, slightly fibrillous and darker at age (as well as the leaves of previous years). Leaves 4–8, mostly clustered on the proximal 2/5 of the culms; blades herbaceous, 10–50 cm long, 1.5–3.6 mm wide, ±flat, becoming triangular at the apex, glabrous adaxially and abaxially, except for the margins and midrib being scabrous distally, light-green colored; leaf sheaths tight, pale green to stramineous abaxially, whitish to yellowish and somewhat hyaline adaxially, sometimes sparingly orange to black-dotted, truncate to concave or the distalmost V shaped at the apex; ligules 0.2–1.8 mm long, often split at the apex and then M shaped, the free portion whitish, ca. 0.1–0.2 mm wide. Vegetative shoots sparsely produced, 3–6 cm tall, with 5–6 leaves. Inflorescences 2.6–6.5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, oblong to linear, with 4–7 spikes, the distal 2–3 approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 5.5–27 mm distant, subsessile to short (up to 8 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts 7–20 cm long, foliaceous, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 8–14 mm long, the pistillate portion 4.3–10 mm long, 2.3–4.3 mm wide, 11–24-flowered, the staminate portion 1.9–4.1 mm long, 0.8–1.3 mm wide, 8–15-flowered, inconspicuous, protruding 0–2.2 mm beyond perigynia; lateral spikes much smaller, except the proximalmost spike more or less similar to the terminal one; cladoprophylls ±tubular or slightly distended, ±similar in color and pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 1.2–2.3 (–2.5) mm long, 1.1–1.3 mm wide, shorter than the perigynia, usually reaching only to the base of the beaks, except the proximalmost ±equalling the perigynia, ovate, glabrous, white to very slightly ochraceous with a 3-nerved green center and hyaline margins, obtuse to acute. Staminate scales 1–1.7 mm long, 0.7–1 mm wide, ovate to elliptic, obtuse, ±cucullate, whitish-hyaline with a green, 1-nerved center. Perigynia 2–3.1 mm long, 0.8–1.3 mm wide, ascending, trigonous with elliptic to slightly obovate sides, adaxial side concave, ±nerveless or finely and inconspicuously 12–16-nerved, abaxial sides flat, 4–8 nerved, ±cuneately tapering to a broad base, green, herbaceous, papillose, not tuberculate, hairs spreading-ascending, 0.05–0.08 mm long, distributed over the entire surface, but concentrated on the nerves, strongly flattened, deltate, whitish; contracted into a beak, beaks (0.3–) 0.4–0.9 mm long, obliquely cut or shortly bidentulate with teeth 0.1–0.3 mm long. Achenes (1.5–) 1.7–1.8 mm long, 0.8–0.9 mm wide, trigonous with flat or concave elliptic to obovate sides, pale-green to pale brown, finely papillose, ±sessile, apiculus essentially absent; style straight, glabrous, stigmas ca. 0.5–0.8 mm long, flexuous, finely papillose to ±smooth (papillae shorter than the width of the stigmas). Anthers ca. 0.5–0.8 mm long, filaments short-exserted to 0.1–0.2 mm, flattened, ca. 0.1–0.3 mm wide, about ½ to as wide as the anthers, stiffly curved, pale yellowish-brown, darkening apically after the anthers are shed.  [details]
