Description Habit cespitose from short, fibrillose rhizomes. Culms 30–75 cm tall, apparently erect, longer than the leaves, slightly bulbous-tickened at the very base, trigonous, usually minutely papillose, smooth or antrorsely scabrous-angled distally; bladeless basal sheaths easily ruptured, fibrillous and darker at age. Leaves 3–5, clustered on the proximal 1/5–1/10 of the culms; blades coriaceous, 4–25 cm long, 1–2.5 mm wide, flat or somewhat convolute, attenuate and curved or curled at the apex, usually papillose, especially abaxially, the margins and midrib antrorsely scabrous, sometimes from the base; leaf sheaths tight, pale green to stramineous and papillose dorsally, whitish to stramineous, opaque or somewhat hyaline ventrally, slightly convex to truncate at the apex; ligules very short, ±truncate and sometimes reduced to the free portion of 0.2–0.3 mm wide, white to brown. Vegetative shoots up to 4.5 cm tall, with 4–5 leaves. Inflorescences 3–8.5 cm long, 0.6–1.7 cm wide, oblong to linear, spikes (2–) 4–8 spikes, the distal 2–5 spikes approximate, sessile, the proximalmost 6.5–32 mm distant, sessile or very short (to 4 mm) pedunculate; proximalmost bracts 3.5–11 cm long, foliaceous, with short, expanded, hyaline, entire margins at the base to 4.7 mm long, the distal bracts gradually reduced; terminal spike 12–26 mm long, pistillate portion 6–18 mm long, (5–) 6–8 mm wide, 8–14-flowered, staminate portion 6.5–12 mm long, 1.8–3.8 mm wide, ca. 16–30-flowered, conspicuous, protruding 4.5–11 mm beyond perigynia, lateral spikes much smaller except the proximalmost more or less similar to the terminal spike; cladoprophylls distended and asymmetrical, ±similar in color and in pubescence to the perigynia. Pistillate scales 2.9–5 mm long, 1.8–2.9 mm wide, shorter than the perigynia or the proximalmost with an awn exceeding them, broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, glabrous or the proximalmost scabrous along the midvein, with a 3-nerved stramineous to pale-brown center, white to stramineous sides and hyaline margins, obtuse to acuminate, or the proximalmost prolonged into a stout awn. Staminate scales 3.5–5.2 mm long, 1.6–2.2 mm wide, oblong, pale brown, with a darker brown, 3-nerved center and hyaline margins, often with a dark brown zone on the distal half, acute to acuminate. Perigynia (3.2–) 3.4–4.7 mm long, (1.6–) 1.8–2 mm wide, spreading-ascending, trigonous with obovate sides, adaxial side nerveless or inconspicuously 7–9-nerved; abaxial sides inconspicuosly 5–8-nerved, nerves ±concealed by the dense pubescence, coriaceous, contracted into a stout, stipitate base 0.4–0.8 mm long and ca. 0.9 mm wide, dark-brown, densely papillose, not tuberculate, hairs ±appressed-ascending, 0.07–0.17 mm long, ±densely distributed over the entire surface, strongly flattened, narrowly deltate, whitish; contracted into a beak; beaks 0.4–0.8 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, bidentate, somewhat hyaline at the apex, teeth 0.2–0.7 mm long. Achenes 2.5–2.7 mm long, (1.5–) 1.6–1.8 mm wide, trigonous with slightly concave obovate sides, pale brown, minutely papillose to smoooth, apiculus short (≤ 0.3 mm), shortly stipitate; style straight, papillose, stigmas ca. 3–3.9 mm long, flexuous, feathery, the papillae longer than the stigma width.
Anthers (1.6–) 2.2–3.4 mm long, filaments exserted ca. 1.2–1.7 mm, ca. 0.05 mm wide, filiform and much narrower than the anthers, flexuous, whitish.  [details]
